We're getting silly this summer. So we reached out to our pal Tom Angelberger, who visited Turnrow while touring for Darth Paper Strikes Back (part two of the best-selling Origami Yoda series), and he agreed to sign copies of his new book, Crankee Doodle, for our Child's First Book Club.
In this hilarious new picture book, Tom gives the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" a literal interpretation. We were equally entertained by the artwork, contributed by Tom's wife, Cece Bell, who also signed our books and illustrated each one with the hilarious bucktoothed pony who spends the story trying to convince Yankee Doodle to do things such as go to town, stick a feather in his hat, call it macaroni, etc. The book reaches absurd heights the madder Mr. Doodle gets. It reminds us of the blustery, madcap humor of Green Eggs and Ham.
We're proud to add this book to our Child's First Book Club and is exemplary of the great titles we've offered in the club's first year. (Last month's selection, If You Want to See a Whale, has been one of our best-selling titles of the summer.) If you're not a member of the club, sign up before August's selection, another off-beat story, this one from a prominent designer and illustrator yet to be named....
Each month our club members receive one signed first edition picture book (along with some extras) for the book's retail list price, plus shipping if you need us to mail to you or a young loved one. A list of the club's selections to date is available here. July is the third month in a row that we were able to offer books signed by both the author and the illustrator. Our club members have reported back to us with glowing reviews. Not only do kids love the books, the signatures make them even more special and collectible. (Never mind providing opportunity for a valuable lesson ... taking care of your books.)
